Probiotics are ‘good’ bacteria, living organisms, that scientific trials indicate confer a health benefit on the body by improving intestinal microbial balance and so inhibiting pathogens or toxin producing bacteria. Probiotics are found in some foods like yoghurt or fermented milk, and in dietary supplements generally as tablets, powders or capsules. There many different species and strains of probiotic bacteria and it can be confusing. It is better to choose an identified strain of probiotic organism as these strains have been developed and scientifically tested for effectiveness. Studies confirm that health benefits are strain-specific and only rarely apply to generic species. A strain with more research evidence is more likely to be effective.
Probiotics are generally recommended after a course of antibiotics or other gastric disturbance to restore gastro-intestinal balance. They have been shown to support a strong immune system and resistance to some allergens among other things. Probiotics may also be taken to support resistance to travellers’ stomach upsets.
SANDERSON® Gut Restore helps restore balance to gut and bowel flora after gastro-intestinal upset, diarrhoea, or post-antibiotics. It may also be taken preventatively to help support resistance to traveller’s diarrhoea.
